Altea is one of the most distinctive towns on the Costa Blanca coast, known for its old town climbing up the hill toward the dome of the Nuestra Señora del Consuelo church, covered in blue-and-white tiles. Narrow, cobbled streets, white houses and numerous artists' studios give this place an atmosphere different from the typical seaside resorts of the region. Altea has long attracted painters, craftsmen and people seeking a calmer, more Mediterranean lifestyle than in the neighboring, more touristic towns. Life in Altea follows a rhythm set by the sea and the mountains that surround the town from the west. The seaside promenade, the stony beaches and the marina lie alongside agricultural land and steep slopes, where more and more villas with views of the bay are being built. It is close both to the larger centers of the coast and to the quieter, rural areas further inland, which means that the town combines different rhythms of life. Buying a house in Altea means choosing a place with a distinct cultural and landscape identity, where architecture, art and closeness to nature play an important role in everyday life. It is also a decision to settle in a town that has preserved its local character, despite its popularity among people coming from other parts of Europe.
